Sir Milton Margai

1895-1964

Sir Milton was prime minister of Sierra Leone, from 1961 to 1964. A prominent doctor, he turned to politics in 1949 and led his country to independence in 1961 while serving as chief minister. It was during this time that Sir Milton launched an appeal to raise funds for a permanent building for the school. One year on in 1962, Sir Milton laid the foundation stone of the present permanent site on Wilkinson Road and the school was renamed the Sir Milton Margai School for the Blind. He received his knighthood in 1959.
